Change who has a working house key

Residential Rekeying and Lock Changes

Rekey serviceable deadbolts, knobs and levers so old keys stop working, or replace worn and incompatible hardware when a simple rekey is not the right repair.

Call first; photos may be requested of both sides of every lock plus the number of new keys required.

Move-in • lost key • tenant change

Rekeying changes who can enter without replacing serviceable hardware

The cylinder is changed so the old operating key no longer works, then new keys are issued for the approved locks.

New-home rekey

Establish a known key set after closing instead of trusting an unknown history of copies.

Lost or stolen house key

Change compatible exterior cylinders when a missing key creates an access concern.

Rental and tenant transition

Rekey authorized rental properties between occupants or after keys are not returned.

Key compatible locks alike

Reduce key clutter by placing compatible exterior cylinders on one house key.

Replace non-serviceable cylinders

Install compatible new hardware where the existing lock is damaged, worn or cannot be rekeyed.

Smart-lock mechanical backup

Address the physical key cylinder while electronic codes, users and app ownership are also reset by the authorized account holder.

Keep what works; replace what does not

Rekey versus replacement

The least expensive choice should still leave the door reliable and appropriate for its function.

ConditionRekeyReplace
Hardware works smoothly and only access needs to changeUsually the best fit.Not necessary unless an upgrade is desired.
Cylinder binds, key sticks or plug is badly wornPossible after inspection, but may not be durable.Often the better long-term option.
Latch or deadbolt body is brokenWill not correct mechanical failure.Replace the failed lock or component.
Door needs a different function or finishDoes not change function or trim.Choose compatible new hardware.
Several locks should use one keyWorks when keyways and cylinders are compatible.May be required to create compatibility.
Smart lock account or code is compromisedMechanical rekey may address the backup key only.Electronic users/account must be reset; replace hardware if account control cannot be secured.
Complete the access change

Residential key-control checklist

A rekey is most useful when the household also controls new copies and electronic access.

After the rekey

  • Count every new key and identify who receives it
  • Keep one backup in a controlled location
  • Remove old keys from key rings so they are not confused with the new set
  • Update garage, keypad and smart-lock codes separately
  • Remove former app users and transfer smart-lock account ownership
  • Test every key in every assigned exterior lock
  • Document landlord, tenant or property-manager key handoff

A mechanical rekey does not erase electronic access.

Garage remotes, keypad codes, smart-lock users and alarm credentials must be updated separately when people or devices should no longer have access.

Accurate lock count

What to have ready for a residential rekey quote

The number and compatibility of cylinders determine more than the number of doors.

1

Count the exterior locks

Include deadbolts, knobs/levers, detached garages, gates and any lock that should change.

2

Photograph both sides of the hardware

Brand, cylinder style, smart-lock model and door condition can affect serviceability.

3

State the desired key relationship

One key for all compatible locks, separate keys, landlord copies or another arrangement.

4

Choose the number of new keys

Include household, tenant, manager and controlled backup copies.

5

Confirm authorization and timing

Owner, manager or lawful occupant authority must be established before access is changed.

Clear answers

Questions customers ask before booking

When should I rekey instead of replace?

Rekey when the existing lock is serviceable and the main goal is to stop old keys from working. Replace when the lock body, latch, cylinder, trim or function is worn, damaged or unsuitable.

Can different brands be keyed to one house key?

Only when the cylinders use compatible keyways and pinning systems. Similar-looking residential locks may not accept the same key.

Should I rekey after buying a house?

It is a practical way to establish known key control when prior owners, contractors, agents, tenants or neighbors may still have copies.

Can you rekey rental property between tenants?

Yes with owner or property-manager authorization. Provide the number of locks, desired keys, access time and billing information.

Can a smart lock be rekeyed?

The mechanical backup cylinder may be rekeyable depending on the brand and model. Electronic codes, app users and account ownership must also be changed separately.
