Why VIN confirmation comes before a promise
A year/make/model lookup can still return multiple possible keys. The VIN, production data and ignition configuration help distinguish the correct system. Other factors include the current software level, previous module replacement, regional import status and whether a used key has been locked to another vehicle.
| Coverage factor | How it affects service |
|---|---|
| Model year and production date | A mid-year change can introduce a different key, transponder or security procedure. |
| Trim and ignition option | Push-button start and keyed ignition versions of the same model may use entirely different parts. |
| All keys lost vs. add-a-key | Security access and programming steps can change when no authorized key remains. |
| Domestic vs. imported configuration | Frequency, part numbers and immobilizer variants may differ by market. |
| Manufacturer access policy | Some data and programming routes are available to qualified locksmiths; others are controlled by the manufacturer or dealer network. |
Mercedes-Benz and other restricted situations
Some Mercedes-Benz and other luxury applications may require a dealer-ordered key or a manufacturer-controlled process that is not available through ordinary locksmith security access. Other Mercedes, Sprinter or European work may be possible depending on the exact system and job type. The answer must be determined vehicle by vehicle.
